Completion of Atlin Promenade Improves Waterfront Access

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

The Atlin Promenade is now complete. It will serve as a dedicated pedestrian walkway between the Northland Cruise Terminal and the Atlin Terminal, connecting amenities like the Cow Bay Marina and retail stores with the existing Millenium Walkway and Rotary Waterfront Park.

“We all know that this community’s desire for improved public access to the waterfront is a top priority, and the Atlin Promenade is another step in that direction,” said Ken Veldman, Director of Public Affairs for the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

Following the removal of the derelict structure that once housed Odin Seafood plant in 2016, this section of waterfront was underutilized as a public asset. The Atlin Promenade project builds on the development vision for lands in the Cow Bay area, informed by community consultations.

The project is complimentary to the recently completed Atlin parking lot improvement, which also creates a beautified public space in the Cow Bay neighbourhood.

“This investment from the Port has significantly improved the area surrounding Atlin for both residents and visitors to Prince Rupert,” said City of Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain. “We appreciate their continued efforts to improve waterfront access and help beautify our community for all to enjoy.”

Since 1999, the Prince Rupert Port Authority has invested nearly $20 million into public amenities along the harbour waterfront, including the renovation of Atlin Terminal in 2001, the development of Northland Cruise Terminal in 2004, and contributions to the City of Prince Rupert’s Cow Bay Marina in 2016.

“Its taken time, but we’re proud of the transformation that we’ve been able to be a big part of over the last two decades,” said Shaun Stevenson, VP of Trade Development and Public Affairs. “We’ve tried hard to find win-win projects like the Atlin Promenade, where we’ve been able to support the priorities of our business and local residents. Our biggest successes have been achieved when we’ve been able to be arm-in-arm with our partners and our community.”
