PRPA Supports Maternity Ward Upgrades to Strengthen Care for Families in Prince Rupert

EFFECTIVE MARCH 11, 2026

PRINCE RUPERT, BRITISH COLUMBIA – Families in Prince Rupert will benefit from enhanced maternity care at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital, following a $125,000 contribution from Prince Rupert Port Authority’s (PRPA) Community Investment Fund. Delivered in partnership with the North Coast Health Improvement Society, this investment supports key maternity ward improvements that strengthen essential maternity services for newborns and parents in the community.

The funding enabled targeted maternity ward improvements, including a fetal heart monitor, two isolette incubators, a new security door, and the creation of a dedicated space where parents with other children can attend pre- and post-natal assessments more comfortably. Together, these upgrades support safer care, improved monitoring, and a more family-centred environment.

The Prince Rupert Regional Hospital maternity ward assists with approximately 175 births each year for residents of Prince Rupert and surrounding Indigenous communities and serves as a referral site for patients from Haida Gwaii requiring higher-risk care. These upgrades help ensure families can access modernized care closer to home.

“Well-equipped, modern hospital spaces are essential to delivering high-quality care and supporting the healthcare professionals who provide it,” said Kurt Slocombe, Interim President, PRPA. “This investment helps strengthen local maternity services and supports families during one of the most important moments in their lives.”

“With these upgrades in place, the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital is better able to support families who rely on our hospital’s maternity ward,” said Stefan Delloch, North Coast Health Improvement Society President. “Creating a safer, more welcoming environment also helps attract and retain skilled healthcare professionals who want to work in a well-supported facility. We are incredibly grateful to all of our donors for their generous support.”

Since the creation of the Community Investment Fund in 2010, PRPA has committed nearly $1.3 million to healthcare projects in Prince Rupert, including:
