Environmental Stewardship

Ensuring sustainable operations across the Port.

PRPA is guided in all of its activities by the key principles of pollution prevention, preservation of environmental integrity, efficient use of resources, and continuous improvement. Adherence to these principles ensures the Port will continue to develop in a manner that achieves balance with the natural environment in which it operates.

Pollution Prevention

Pollution prevention avoids or minimizes the creation of pollutants and wastes at the source. By focusing on preventing the release of pollutants and wastes into the environment, not only are adverse environmental and health impacts avoided and minimized now and in the future, but the costs associated with clean-up are reduced.

Preservation of Environmental Integrity

PRPA’s Land Use Management Plan guides Port development plans, providing for sustainable and environmentally appropriate development by minimizing environmental impact on lands and waters, meeting or exceeding applicable regulatory standards, and striving for development compatible with neighbouring communities.

Efficient Use of Resources

The efficient use of resources, including energy, water, and materials, is an important aspect of sustainability in terms of preventing pollution and ensuring resources remain available for future generations. Resource efficiency involves not only using less, but also selecting and using materials that are renewable, reusable, and recyclable.

Continuous Improvement

Continuous improvement constitutes an ongoing effort to improve overall environmental sustainability performance. Continuous improvement demands a process of regular review and action. Innovation is often an important feature of continuous improvement.
