Economic Impact

The Port of Prince Rupert is a critical economic engine for western Canada. As the country’s closest port to Asia, with rail connectivity across North America, Prince Rupert serves as a diverse and strategic trade gateway to global markets. 

$60 billion worth of cargo is handled at the Port each year, supporting intermodal supply chains, global food security, and Canada’s growing energy export economy.  

Across the Northern BC transportation corridor, the Prince Rupert Gateway directly supports 3,300 full-time jobs in terminal operations, logistics, rail, trucking, and other port-related activities. Those businesses and organizations help support an additional 4,200 jobs in indirect and induced employment. 

Prince Rupert Gateway activity also generated $142 million in taxation revenue for all levels of government in 2022, through associated stipends, personal tax, corporate tax, and property tax revenues. The Governments of Canada and BC are the largest recipients of tax revenue, but local governments received $12 million from Port properties. Learn more about local tax revenue here.
