Applicants must attend school, college or university during the last school term and return to their studies in the subsequent academic year.

Job Description:
Maintenance – Preventative (5 positions)
The students will assist the Asset Management Department with preventative maintenance activities and work orders. The students will lead the completion of grounds keeping activities, painting, and pressure washing. Field work will also include basic maintenance work, inspections, surveys (GIS) and operating basic maintenance equipment and tools. The students will assist at community events and ensure the 5S program is maintained (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain).
The students should possess good spoken communication skills, work safely, and understand small power tools. The students should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and work well both individually and in a team environment. The students should also possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and be able to produce a Driver’s Abstract (if requested).
Work will predominantly be in the field, with some time spent in an office environment. The positions may require work on vessels and irregular work hours.
Human Resources (1 position)
The student will work with the Human Resources Operations and Services Team on various HR programs. In particular, the student provides support in the area of Recruitment & Selection, Human Resources Records Management, Employee Communications, and Employee Reward & Recognition.
The student should possess strong written and spoken communication skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams, as well as good judgment and tact in dealing with sensitive issues and confidential information. The student should be enthusiastic, self-motivated and like working with people.
The student’s work will be predominantly in an office environment.
Occupational Health & Safety (1 position)
The Human Resources Department seeks a candidate interested in exploring a career in Occupational Health & Safety (OHS).
Reporting to the OHS Manager, duties will include:
- Supporting the manager in conducting a legislative and regulatory gap analysis.
- Exploring and reporting on creating automated workflows in the Microsoft Office 365 environment.
- Conduct audits and inspections. (Bullet 2).
- Support the manager in creating a safety compliance dashboard.
- conduct inventory checks on first aid, PPE and safety equipment.

Engineering (2 positions)
The students will assist the Engineering Department in the design, field review and administration of PRPA capital construction projects. Various Engineering projects will be assigned, including but not limited to completing field reconnaissance to confirm the property’s physical characteristics (e.g., manual soil probing to measure overburden thickness) and land surveying. Work will include assistance in preparing concept drawings and preliminary budget estimates, and technical reports for future development proposals.
The students must at minimum, have completed their first year of study in engineering or engineering technology in an accredited University or College and must possess the following qualifications and capabilities:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and AutoCAD
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical techniques.
- Basic understanding of land surveying.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Basic knowledge of project management.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assignments.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Project
- Knowledge of Revit and Civil 3d is an advantage.
- Ability to write a Technical Report
- Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and be able to produce a Driver’s Abstract (if requested).
- Ability to move safely around construction sites and undeveloped land, including climbing ladders and performing moderate lifting.
The students will work both in the field and in an office environment. This position may require occasional irregular work hours.
Trade Development & Real Estate (1 Position)
The successful candidate will be expected to assist the Port’s marketing, and real estate activities focused on a commercial audience; assist the Marketing team with research, identification and analysis of intermodal and bulk commodities market opportunities; assist with the administration and updating of the organizational Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database; as well as investigating cruise destination development plans.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Business Administration, Commerce, International Business, Tourism, or a related discipline. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, is essential.
The successful candidate will be comfortable conducting research using online sources; synthesizing and presenting findings through reports, memos, and presentations; compiling and representing data through tables, charts, and infographics; assisting with project scheduling and note-taking tasks as required. In addition, the student must be able to think critically, make informed decisions, and work unsupervised.
Environmental Sustainability (2 positions)
The students will assist in the various environmental stewardship programs. This includes monitoring and sampling programs with work conducted on a vessel, data collection, reporting and research as well as other tasks as required.
The students should be enrolled in an undergraduate program in Science, Ecology or Marine Studies in a University or College. Good writing and communication skills are required, and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is an asset.
The student’s work will be split between an office environment and fieldwork. The position will also require working on vessels and may require occasional irregular work hours. The student must be able to lift items of up to 25 pounds.
Communications (1 position)
The communications team seeks an enthusiastic student who will assist the communications team with various exciting projects for PRPA.
In this position, the student will support ongoing communication initiatives in copywriting and editing, digital content development, traditional and social media monitoring, website content management, archiving and maintenance of digital assets, marketing collateral development, and communications planning.
The student should be enrolled in a program at a post-secondary institution studying communications, marketing, public relations, or journalism. Excellent writing skills and attention to detail are a must. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential, while familiarity with social media platforms, content management systems, and/or creative development software would be considered an asset. Experience with photography, videography, and related editing software is also preferred.
The student will work primarily in an office environment during regular business hours.
Information Technology (1 position)
The student will work with the Information Technology Department, reporting to the IT manager on various projects, including configuration and deployment of switches, radios, deployment of new PCs, asset management and front-line user support.
The student should be enrolled in a technology-based or another related program that utilizes technology. Good writing and communication skills are required. A basic understanding of the following is considered an asset:
- Networking
- Desktop Computer Support
- Microsoft Office application use and support
The student’s work will be split between an office environment and fieldwork, and they should be able to lift up to 50 pounds. This position may require occasional irregular work hours.
Digital Business (1 Position)
The student will work with the Digital Business Department, reporting to the Manager, Digital Business, on data integration projects focusing on incorporating PRPA’s data into the data warehouse and developing dashboards based on the data.
The student should be enrolled in a technology-based or another related program that utilizes technology. Good writing and communication skills are required. A basic understanding of the following is considered an asset:
- SQL Server
- T-SQL
- Data Warehousing
- ETL Methodologies
The student’s work will be primarily in an office environment. This position may require occasional irregular work hours.
Finance – Accounting (2 positions)
The student will work with the Accounting Department, reporting to the Manager of Finance. The student will assist in processing payable and receivable invoices and receipts, encoding in the accounting software (BC 365), reconciling accounts, scanning and filing documents, uploading documents in the File Hold system, and assisting with other required administrative and accounting tasks.
The student should be enrolled in a Finance or Accounting program at an accredited University or College and have a basic understanding of Accounting principles, and an intermediate skill level of Microsoft Excel is an asset.
The student will work primarily in an office environment during regular business hours.

Property Administrator
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Real Estate Manager, the Property Administrator oversees PRPA’s diverse real estate portfolio, including property and tenant management, to provide effective real estate support to internal and external stakeholders on commercial, retail, and industrial property matters. The Real Estate business unit manages a dynamic portfolio which helps to shape and support the ongoing growth and development of the Port of Prince Rupert.
MAJOR POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Manages PRPA’s property and tenant management system, by collecting, inputting, tracking, and preparing reports to maintain accurate and up-to-date corporate lease, property, and property tax data.
- Oversees the day-to-day coordination with tenants and PRPA staff, fostering and maintaining collaborative working relations to ensure compliance with lease provisions, maintenance, construction, and other lease matters.
- Assists the Manager with the administration of PRPA’s real estate assets, providing information and guidance to the staff, consultants, and interdisciplinary internal and external stakeholders.
- Undertakes research and data collection to assist in the preparation of memos, reports and correspondence responding to internal and external stakeholder requests regarding property, project, and due diligence matters.
- Coordinates with various technical experts on the creation of maps, graphics, and presentations for internal and external communications.
- Prepares property and rent reviews by analyzing a variety of reports, including appraisals, surveys, property condition assessments, and feasibility studies.
- Support the preparation, collection, and submission of memos, reports, and documents in real estate transactions.
- Supports and contributes on behalf of the Real Estate business unit to various strategic departmental and corporate initiatives, including process improvements.

Formal Education

Related Experience

Manager, Environmental Review & Compliance
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director, Environmental Planning and Compliance, the Manager, Environmental Review & Compliance has a fundamental role in ensuring the highest standards of environmental protection in the Port’s development and operations. In addition to project reviews and environmental compliance, the role is instrumental in delivering exciting projects with habitat restoration and enhancement as well as leading scientific studies and initiatives for the protection of species at risk. This role provides meaningful opportunities to directly influence the planning and delivery of major developments and the operations of a high-performance Canadian Port. The position also includes opportunities for consulting with Indigenous Communities, the Public, and key stakeholders as part of environmental planning processes.
MAJOR POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Oversees development and implementation of Environmental Management Plans for project developments within the Port of Prince Rupert.
- Manages compliance with permits, authorizations and determinations issued under the Fisheries Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Species at Risk Act and Impact Assessment Act.
- Leads environmental effects evaluations for Port Projects.
- Liaises with project proponents, contractors and Port partners and tenants in addressing environmental deficiencies, concerns, and lease/approval performance during planning, construction and operations.
- Ensures that project documentation and monitoring/compliance activities are maintained.
- Participates in multi-disciplinary teams with other Port staff in reviewing and supporting Port developments.

Maintenance Mechanic
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Supervisor, Maintenance, the Maintenance Mechanic is a “Hands-on position” responsible for inspecting, repairing, maintaining, installing and modifying the Port’s civil, electrical, mechanical and electromechanical equipment, assets and infrastructure on land and water. The incumbent is also responsible for maintenance on other types of equipment under the control of the Prince Rupert Port Authority, including but not limited to the following areas: Fairview Container Terminal, Ridley Island’s Rail Road and Utility Corridor, Westview Terminal, Atlin Terminal, Ocean Dock, Alaska Ferries, Digby Island Ferry, Scott Road, Port offices and miscellaneous other Port property, including fire suppression systems, pump stations 2 & 3, water treatment chlorination systems, valve chambers, vehicles, boats and other equipment.
The Maintenance Mechanic’s responsibilities also extend to other trade-related disciplines as well as capital project improvements and new project construction, as assigned.
MAJOR POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Performs maintenance duties and ensures that all PRPA property, infrastructure and equipment are maintained to a very high standard, in compliance with regulatory requirements and PRPA policies.
- Maintains complete records and documentation related to maintenance, testing, repair and modifications to the Port’s infrastructure, controlled equipment and facilities utilizing CMMS (computerized preventative maintenance management system) tools.
- Adheres to maintenance, testing and installation procedures established as acceptable for equipment under the jurisdiction of the Maintenance Department and assists in the review of existing procedures and the development of new procedures.
- Complies with all of the Port’s prevention and safety rules, policies and procedures.
- Assists daily in maintaining a clean, safe, orderly, and hazard-free workplace utilizing 5S practices (sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain).
- Assists with the development, implementation and continued use of an appropriate safety management system applicable to the department, but more importantly, actively follows the safety rules and regulations pertaining to the work.
- Assists in maintaining an adequate supply of spare parts.
- Reads and understands technical manuals, drawings and prints.
- Consults with the Director, Asset Management and/or Supervisor, and Maintenance in designing new installations to ensure compliance with Canadian Code requirements and other acceptable installation practices.
- Assists with environmental clean-up operations and responds to fire and security alarms and other related tasks, as required.
- Assists with capital project improvement work through the application of trade skills and the support of other tradespeople.
- Ensures technical, First Aid and all other required certifications are up to date. This includes WHMIS, BCWWA, forklift, truck inspection, Aerial work platform, Fall Protection, etc.
- Must actively participate and contribute in PPI’s (personal performance interviews), including tracking and recording all information.
- Provides mentorship to the maintenance staff enrolled in various apprentice programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works mainly outdoors, in and around all PRPA property and equipment.
- Regular, full-time position (37.5 hours per week). Regular working hours are Mondays to Fridays, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with 1 hour (unpaid) lunch break. Regular work hours may be revised to meet maintenance or operational needs.
- May occasionally be required to work outside normal working hours.
- On call after office hours and on a weekly rotating or periodic basis.
- Physical ability needed for climbing ladders, working at high heights, including in a bucket truck, lifting and/or pulling heavy objects.
- Some exposure to dirt, oil, noise, wet weather, and cold temperature.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education
- Certified operator with BC Water Wastewater Association, in particular water and wastewater treatment.
- Journeyman in the mechanical /millwright /electrical/fabrication/building disciplines is an asset.
Related Experience
- Certification in rail maintenance.
- Experience in operating small vessels, forklifts, barge loading ramps, and other Commercial related equipment is an asset.
